Once transplanted, the donor stem cells begin rebuilding the blood and immune system. Over time, they produce:
- Red blood cells that carry oxygen
- White blood cells that fight infections
- Platelets that help with clotting
So the donor cells gradually become the primary source of new blood cells. However, the rest of your body — organs, tissues, skin — remains your own. This is actually why GVHD can occur: the donor immune cells can sometimes see your body's own tissues as "foreign" and attack them.
